I thought that Howard Michel, WB2ITX was doing a good job, then this:

      01/19/2020

At its meeting this weekend, the ARRL Board of Directors did not elect Howard Michel, WB2ITX, as the ARRL Chief Executive Officer. Beginning Monday, January 20, Barry Shelley, N1VXY, will become interim CEO. Mr. Shelley was ARRL’s Chief Financial Officer for 28 years and CEO during 2018 before his retirement. The board has created a search committee to select the next CEO. More details on this and other matters which took place at the board meeting will be released shortly.

In the interest of transparency I will state that I voted not to renew Dr. Michel’s contract. The decision not to renew his contract was not taken lightly, and there were many factors that developed over the last year involved in that difficult decision. Unfortunately, there is not much else I can say due to employee/employer confidentiality. It’s not a transparency issue, it’s a legal one.

Please note that the ARRL Board officially sets policy, and as such the ARRL’s vision and mission is established within its Strategic Plan. It’s the CEO’s job to work with the Board, and lead ARRL staff to achieve the goals and initiatives of the Strategic Plan. The CEO also has responsibility for successfully running “ARRL, the Company”, among other things. It’s a big job.

The bottom line is that nothing is going to change, and the ARRL will continue to evolve towards the future. It has to. The ARRL will be reviewing and revising it’s Strategic Plan this year, but that process probably won’t be started in earnest until a new CEO, (or other title), is hired.
