There have been a lot of clubs using our NW Division account to hold virtual meetings, and everybody seems to be pretty happy with it.

You will find that Zoom will probably work for you in the dead of a Fairbanks winter too!

In the interest of transparency I will state that I voted not to renew Dr. Michel’s contract. The decision not to renew his contract was not taken lightly, and there were many factors that developed over the last year involved in that difficult decision. Unfortunately, there is not much else I can say due to employee/employer confidentiality. It’s not a transparency issue, it’s a legal one.

Please note that the ARRL Board officially sets policy, and as such the ARRL’s vision and mission is established within its Strategic Plan. It’s the CEO’s job to work with the Board, and lead ARRL staff to achieve the goals and initiatives of the Strategic Plan. The CEO also has responsibility for successfully running “ARRL, the Company”, among other things. It’s a big job.

The bottom line is that nothing is going to change, and the ARRL will continue to evolve towards the future. It has to. The ARRL will be reviewing and revising it’s Strategic Plan this year, but that process probably won’t be started in earnest until a new CEO, (or other title), is hired.

As far as I know there are two potential candidates for AK SM. They are David Stevens, KL7EB, and Lor Baker, AL2R. I’m sure that HQ will be sending out an official notice soon.

Here is what I received from HQ when asking about the status last month:

“Paul Stiles, KF7SOJ, of Billings, has been nominated to run for the office of Montana Section Manager.

Nominating petitions for the Montana Section Manager’s position are being re-solicited now (and the re-nomination announcement will appear in the April and the May issues of QST) since no petitions were received from Montana when the original nomination period closed on December 7, 2018.

Montana SM George Forsyth, AA7GS, has decided not to run for a new term of office. George has been Section Manager since April of 2013.

If no other nominations arrive by the June 7, 2019, receipt deadline, then Paul, KF7SOJ, would become the Section Manager as of October 1, 2019, for an 18-month term of office (versus the normal 24 month [2-year] term of office.)

If there are additional nominations to arrive at HQ by June 7, 2019, then there will be an election held this summer in Montana.”

Section Manager election ballots would be sent out to members in Montana no later than July 1, 2019. Filled-out ballots would then need be returned to ARRL Headquarters no later than August 16, 2019. Ballots would be counted on Tuesday, August 20. Then, the newly-elected Section Manager would officially begin on October 1, 2019, for an 18-month term of office.

I hope that fills you in. Check your QST magazine for the latest. If I hear anything, I’ll let you, and everybody know.

Michael; I’d like to see a forum devoted to ARRL matters. If those new posts can be automatically sent to me somehow, that would be great! Otherwise I have to log in and see if anything is new…..

Great job on this forum system. People are already using it! 🙂

I use a LOT of those 2 inch ferrites here, basically on all the feedlines entering the shack. Great investment.

in reply to: Status of new ARES requirements #726

At the January Board meeting, the ARRL released its ARES Plan. ICS-300 and ICS-400 were removed as requirements, but are listed as “recommended” for ARES leadership only (SECs and ECs). The full ARES Plan can be downloaded here: http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Public%20Service/ARES/ARES%20Plan%20-%20rev%2001-30%20-19.pdf.
The ARES plan is subject to revision as needs change. It is a living document. If you have comments regarding the ARES Plan, please contact your Vice Director, Mark Tharp, KB7HDX, who is a member of the Public Service Enhancement Working Group, and is responsible for the document.

The database is known as the ARES Connect program. Not every SEC in every Northwestern Division section is requiring that members participate in the program. I know what neither Alaska nor Oregon are participating at this time. If you have a question that regards whether or not your Section is participating, please contact your Section Manager, or Section Emergency Coordinator.

I hope this answers your questions!
